Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the recently concluded 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
In a statement released on Sunday, Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson to the Vice President, made the announcement.
While in New York, Shettima urged global leaders to renew their commitment to reforming the United Nations Security Council. He advocated for permanent seats for Nigeria and other African nations, emphasizing the need for the UN to enhance its relevance and credibility in an ever-evolving world.
“Some permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have shown encouraging, albeit cautious, signs of support for reform. We welcome this shift in tone and call for accelerated progress in the reform process,” Shettima stated.
“The Security Council should be expanded, both in its permanent and non-permanent categories, to better represent the world’s diversity and plurality. We fully endorse Secretary-General Guterres’ efforts in this direction.”
The Vice President also highlighted that the UN embodies multilateralism, grounded in inclusivity, and driven by the pillars of peace, sustainable development, and human rights.
