Governance College Kano Emerges Winner at 10th National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy in Kano

The 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy, organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), National Assembly, has been successfully conducted in Kano State.

Speaking at the event, the Kano State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services in the Ministry, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, described the competition as a symbol of Nigeria’s growing democracy. He emphasized that involving youth at the grassroots in such initiatives would equip them with fundamental knowledge of the legislature and governance.

In his goodwill message, the Director General of NILDS, Professor Abubakar Aliyu Sulaiman, represented by Malam Aliyu Abdullahi, noted that the quiz competition was first introduced in 2016 with schools drawn from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He explained that the governing council later directed its expansion to cover all 36 states of the federation, thereby widening its reach and impact.

 

Also speaking, the Assistant Chief Legislative Officer of the Kano State House of Assembly, Malam Umar Abdulganiyu, commended the initiative and stressed that since 2022, the state assembly has continued to contribute immensely towards the success of the competition. He assured that the assembly remains open to students and the public for legislative education and engagement.

A total of six secondary schools participated in this year’s Kano edition of the quiz. The schools include:

Governance College Kano

Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa

Government Secondary School Rano

Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo

Science College Dawakin Tofa

Government Science and Technical School Sumaila

At the end of the contest, Governance College Kano emerged victorious, while Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo took second place, and Government Secondary School Rano secured the third position.

One of the winners, Yunus Kabir Yusuf, expressed delight over the college’s performance, while praying to Almighty God for continued success in the forthcoming zonal and national stages of the competition.

With this victory, Governance College Kano will represent Kano State at the zonal level of the national quiz competition.
